Before you place another empty jar in the recycling bin, imagine it glowing softly on a windowsill, patio table, or bookshelf.
Begin with a clean glass jar and layer torn pieces of tissue paper onto the outside using decoupage glue or diluted white glue. Overlap the colors to create a stained-glass effect, or keep the design simple with one color and a few pressed leaves, paper shapes, or pieces of lace.
Once dry, finish the top with twine, ribbon, beads, or a strip of leftover fabric. Make several in different sizes and group them together for a warmer display.
Place a battery-operated candle or a short strand of battery lights inside and watch the colors change when the lantern begins to glow.
Tip: Torn tissue paper creates softer transitions, while cut shapes give you a clearer pattern.
Safety: Use only battery-operated lights. Never place a real flame inside a jar decorated with paper, glue, ribbon, or fabric.
