Paper weaving begins with a simple over-and-under pattern, but it does not have to remain simple. Cut one sheet of paper into evenly spaced slits, leaving the edges intact, then weave separate strips through it one row at a time.
Play with strips of different widths, colors, and textures. Use magazine pages, old maps, gift wrap, painted paper, or even paper you have made yourself. Turn the finished weaving into a greeting card, bookmark, small mat, journal cover, or a piece of abstract art for the wall.
Try changing the pattern as you work. Weave over one and under one, then over two and under two. You may be surprised by how different the same pieces of paper can look when their order changes.
Tip: Begin with wider strips while you get comfortable with the rhythm. They are easier to handle and make the pattern easier to see.
